P's and Q's and Z's and SSS's

Another fun afternoon at the mall. Hey, now, I am telling the truth! I sent my wife away to the stores (poor thing), and I sat in a bench much like the ones you see here, and sketched away! When she came to collect me, I was still sketching, happy as a shopper! Happier even.

Today we went to Parrot Jungle Island, and I sketched the closest thing to a journal page that I have ever done. These sketches are from the shows we went to. So, one at a time, they would bring out the animals, and I would sketch. The animals would move; the trainers would move around. No big deal. It was just like the mall.

So I began thinking the other day for no apparent reason about the letter "q". This is true. Now, if you are wondering why anyone would think about the letter "q", ask yourself first why you would visit the blog of a person that would think about the letter "q".

See? There is plenty of blame to go around.

The thoughts came like this: I tried to remember what letter came before "q" - and I couldn't. I couldn't work backwards from "q". So I worked my way forward. It was "p".

My next thought was that "p" was such a lowbrow letter, makes you think of things like, well, bodily functions, and "q" was so highbrow, with its curly cue and all, that they don't really belong together. Or that maybe the alphabet is the most egalitarian of all groupings.

Anyway, I read the other day that people are controlled all their lives by their experiences as children - from their self-perception, to their choice of spouse and career, etc. This is probably true for me. But, even worse, I realized that I could not remember what letter came before "q" because "p" belonged to "l-m-n-o-p" and "q" belonged to "q-r-s", you know..in the song. The alphabet song.

And maybe the alphabet is not so dispassionate after all, because "p" and "q" appear to belong to different clubs. Same song, different clubs. Just like the rest of us.

Are you still with me?

Because the real reason I am talking about letters is because of a post you may have read here on this blog, when I rambled on about the respect given to Zbigniew Brzezinski, and how throwing some z's in my name might make all the difference. Then, in my last post, came DZAN's cartoon dedicated to PAMO. Now, suddenly, to read PAMO's newest post, DZAN - my creation, who has a "Z" in his name, which I do not - is suddenly responsible for "pure art genius", and is famous, and has a cartoon dedicated to him by PAMO. So visit PAMO's blog to see.

Meanwhile, "Z"-less, I will plod along like the snail with this remarkable trail that I saw this week while I was jogging. This is my Shadow Shot of the week (for Shadow Shot Sunday). And, yes, I am aware that I created this shadow shot with my own shadow. Some may consider that cheating. Others might simply call it "pure art genius".

  1. O what a delightful post! It captures the wonder of a mind that simply cannot accept "as is" and needs to explore other potentials! And the snail trail you leave for us to follow slowly, while your shadow lingers somewhere nearby smiling quietly!

  3. Don't you have fun!! The snail pic could so easily be a watercolour painting. Very interesting post.

  6. Another excellent post: sketch, journal page, photo and ... story ! Do you think that having 4 "t" in both my first and last name adds to my magnificence ? (hey! I didn't say "adds to my size" !!) :oD

  7. Thanks for a good laugh! Love the two mall drawings (the human mall and the animal mall ^^), they're great! The journal page works really well!
    The snail/shadow photo looks awesome.
I had fun reading your alphabet thoughts - and was surprised with the Q being thought of as "highbrow". In french, Q is prononced like "cul" and that is the bad word for "backside"... not highbrow at all ^^!

  9. Pure art genius for sure! :) Part of the clever high-brow q-set!

I loved your post! Odd...but most enjoyable!

Hey I also have to go through the whole alphabet from the beginning to figure out which letter is before another. I can't work it out backwards either! Thankfully the alphabet isn't any longer than it is!

  13. I just hate to say this but I cannot tell if your shadow shot is a photo or a painting??? I love it either way! The mall piece is so good, Dan, truly! I love the composition and your point of view on the piece and the colors are just perfection and not chaotic and overwhelming (which is the sense I get from a mall). Wonderful. Oh to be able to sketch with any kind o' skill. Sigh...

  14. Everything about this post is PURE ART GENIUS!!! Your mall sketch is so detailed and expressive, your journal page is inspiring (really!) and your shadow shot really could be a painting. And the story- the story is brilliant. PURE ART GENIUS!!!

  15. Sounds like "q" is a very misunderstood letter. Maybe it has to be extra serious because "p" is the class clown, what with the bodily functions words you alluded to which are beloved by all school-aged kids.

  16. Oh my, so much fun packed into such a small package! Your mall sketch is just amazing, the animals are cute and sweet, the musings interesting, the snail lovely, and the stories are yet another peek into your wonderful view of the world! nancy

  19. This post really made me laugh! "Some may consider that cheating"...I sense that you are referring to my comment on Pamo's blog??? Haha!! Wonderful mall sketch! I love the subtle colors, not overwhelming. The animal sketches are terrific too. Moving animals are difficult! Love your shadow shot...but of course I'm wondering if it really is indeed your shadow!! Wonderful post...I leave here smiling!

  20. Hahahaha... p-q-r-s-t... doesn't really matter why or what, all I can see is that your snail just made a huge J on your shadow shot, and I think the snail's trying to tell you something there.
Love those sketches by the way ^^

  21. I think you are a bridge between the "p"s and the "q"s. Excellent art, writing, and photography here on this blog.

  24. exceptional sketches! I could relate about being happy sketching. Lots of times I am "stuck" somewhere, but then I begin sketching and almost hate to leave. Your men on the bench is especially expressive. I love letters too--I got to "study" type for years...agree...the q is a lovely letter indeed.

  25. Hi Dan, I enjoyed your thought's on letters, "q" and "z" in particular. The drawings are wonderful and inspiring! I find it challenging to do the type of drawings you're doing...but oh so much fun!

  26. Dan - it's always a big treat to read your postings. Both the art and musings intrigue me. Isn't it interesting how letters and spellings influence us? When I was small, my mother spelled my name "Kathie" and her sister wrote "Kathi." In school, kids called me "Katy" and my teachers wrote my name as "Kathy." Alas, no one thought up KZATHY!! Too bad, I could have been famous :-)
