Year-end Reflections

As the year passes
We speak with snowflakes, not words.
There are no words left.

"At First Glance #7", 5" x 7" ink and watercolor

***

Remembering Now,
Imagining seasons -
Images whisper.

 "Rituals" 8" x 6" watercolor

***

At each gathering,
A misty rain of color
That sometimes we see.

"The Gathering" 4" x 6" ink and watercolor

***

Now and then we park
And see passages beyond
The concrete and wire.

Parking Garage, 6" x 6" ink and watercolor

  2. You have written a wonderful poem expressing the end of the year. I especially like the painting "The Gathering" with the bold colors and the almost visible figures in the background. Very imaginative!

    1. Thank you! I was very happy with the colors in the Gathering, not quite as sure about the line drawings (although I like the concept). I still think there is a better way to do it.. But that's for 2014. Happy New Year!

  4. Wonderful images and poem! I really love the next portrait in your 'At First Glance' series and your abstracts are simply lovely. Your parking garage scene demonstrates just how good you are with lines.

Happy New Year! May your 2014 be filled with art, family and friends.

    1. I am so glad you liked all of this Pamo! Thank you for being a joy in my virtual life for yet another year. I love your New Year's wish - Art comes first - lol - was that intentional? I know it keeps me sane (most times) for family and friends. Happy and Joyful New Year to you and your hubby!

  6. From Mary O. Martin: Dan, these may be my favorites among all your work. The haiku made them all the more meaningful for me, but I really seemed to connect with the non-representational pieces. More, more! And that goes for the haiku, too.

    1. Thank you Mary, I am so glad you like the non-representational pieces because I am moving that way, a bit, though retaining representational elements. It is always good to know that my latest work is somebody's favorite! Happy New Year!

  7. From Aziz: These are beautiful watercolors, especially for me those abstracts. Very good Dan.

  9. Dan, your abstract explorations make me think of NY artist Brian Rutenberg. He has a bunch of studio visit youtube videos that are very inspiring. Here is an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrlRy4r_b3U

  10. You know what I like about you....how you 'intermingle' both representational and non-representational work. I really really like that you show both! It's just so refreshing....because many artists feel they have to be one way or the other. And I appreciate all your work...it is really beautiful and uplifting! :)

    1. What a wonderful comment - thank you Celeste! You know, I've done my share of reading of art history. And I am thinking that the combination of representation and non-representation may be the area that has not been fully explored. Quite a few artists today seem to be entering this arena. I know Kandinsky with his manifesto would roll over in his grave. He was right for his time, but his thinking is too rigid for today, I think. And I would say this to any artist today that says so, as well. Now, if I can figure out how to do it, it would be nice. But that's for 2014 and beyond. Happy New Year!

  11. Wow! Such a thoughtful passage. I particularly like the word image "we speak with snowflakes"... I do hope you and your family have an excellent new year and I look forward to more words and images from Dan's Canvas.

  12. The gathering is brilliant! And the passage is deep :) And when I think about snowflakes, I think about me opening my mouth facing the sky... ^^ Yes I am weird like that. Happy New Year!

    1. Hello my new virtual friend! Thanks for coming back! I'm glad you like it. Take a moment and look at a parking garage sometime - really look. They are almost all interesting. Fascinating shapes and textures seen hardly anywhere else. Really, not mundane at all. Happy New Year!

  14. I love all of these; especially, Parking Garage. I think it's the lines--a bit like I Ching readings (from my days of yore). Happy New Year.

  15. These are wonderful! I love how exploratory you've been lately. (Sorry I haven't had time to comment...but I do still peek!) And the haikus seem like they could all come together to form some kind of compound haiku...is there such a thing? Abstract...I love to look but it drives me crazy to do...my brain just binds up. I love the At First Glance...because well, I'm all about drawing people it seems. But I also like The Gathering...abstract...but I can still see hints of my people! Hope you have a great holiday! Happy New Year to you.

    1. Raena!!! So good to hear from you! It is really wonderful to know that you've been peeking. You never have to comment (but I am glad you have).

Re the haikus: what's interesting is that many of the comments seem to have indicated that they thought the individual haikus were stanzas of one poem. And that is neat - just as the haikus and pictures influence one another, reading them in succession influences each. Juxtaposition is fascinating.

As for abstract. I do not feel a need to go wholly abstract at this time. But I've been restless with wholly representational as well (as I've described more fully in previous posts). My love is always and still is people. Don't worry. They'll be around. Happy New Year!!

  21. Okay how could I have missed this post and then two other once before this one?? Where has the time gone, where have I been?... Its been some year and I have to say I like what you made with the abstract pieces, soft, colourful and they have a nice flow to them. And the man on top is a great drawing. Im not sure I could post my year (reflection of it) as it was so crazy, some of my sketches makes me wonder what the heck was going on there when I drew some.

Glad to see you have had a good drawing and painting year Dan, love the figure drawings and this guy with his drink in his hand sure sums it up "relax".

Happy New Years to you and your family and keep up the great painting!!!!

I so wish for you, a Happy Healthy New Year, for you and your family in 2014!
