Many Books, No Story

I went the Miami Book Fair this weekend, as I do every year. The two men in the above sketch are both authors. The ladies are fairgoers. (These two page Moleskine spreads don't display well on the blog, so feel free to double-click to see the image clearly.)

I have some other drawings that more accurately portray the event, that are more complex than random figures and will take some time to color. And this week, I don't have time.

Tonight I added words to the two Moleskine pages. I think my grade school writing teacher is rolling over in her grave. Or making a lipless frown. Or raising a bony arm and shaking a bony finger and rasping, "I told you so."

I could have taken more time on lettering, but as I said, I don't have any. It's been a crazy week.

And that's why, though I have at least one Book Fair story to tell (I think), I'm afraid the story will have to wait. But stories are worth waiting for, right?

  1. Great expression Dan and LOL@ your comments on my last post ^^ Hmmmm I guess it's not uncommon that people would like to strike the 1st price in lottery or winning the roulette huh? I don't gamble so I don't really know, my dad's been trying to get me to gamble for year(yeah, no kidding here!) actually my entire family did that for one time, and realized that I am a hard-headed person with a principle in my mind...so they gave up.
Thanks for your comment Dan, 3 more weeks to go, and I'll be heading to my new home ^^ totally excited here!

  2. Nice drawings capturing the people that you saw . I am looking forward to seeing the other drawings and to the stories - they have to be interesting if they come out of a book fair!

  5. Great sketches Dan! And the lettering isn't awful at all! I look forward to seeing the rest and hearing the stories!

PS I completely freaked out on the art exchange and wrote to the person I'm sending to, to say I would be late, I have to start over. So much pressure! ...trying to relax now

  6. I like this! Especially the guy in the tan jacket, but they all have such expressive faces. ANd your lettering is just fine. I know about hating one's lettering, but yours is fine. And I always enjoy what you have to write about. (I love the "lipless frown" comment. I'm anxious to see what else you have from the book fair.

  11. Yes, stories are absolutely worth waiting for. Can't wait to hear them, or see them, or both...

  12. I was looking at your drawing again, because my friend bought me a Moleskine water color sketchbook, so I can't wait to try it when I "crossover". And it might amuse you but I realized one thing, the girl in green kinda looks like Lou-anne in the King of Hills cartoon series(no we don't have that series in Germany or anywhere else in the world, Tanna got me into it, and it's funny^^) and the other lady looks like her aunt too.
And I'd want to wish you a belated Happy Birthday too!
    16 days and counting ;)

  13. Very nice sketch. Between your drawings (paintings?) and your humor it is just a treat to pop over occasionally.

  14. Thank you all for wanting to hear my stories, for the nice comments about the drawings and for the birthday wishes! Yes, my birthday was on November 23rd. First birthday where I saw a good man lowered into the ground. Hope it's the last. Haven't quite gotten over that. Kind of puts things in perspective - And as for you, Alex, I don't watch the King of the Hill series (caught parts of it once or twice) but I do know it is one of the ugliest darn things I've ever seen! I drew the young woman because she had such an interesting profile.
